Working with the Moon

Working with the Moon

Going with the flow is as natural as can be if you follow the moon.

You already pay some level of attention to her comings and goings, even if that’s just noticing when she’s huge in the sky. It’s possible to do a lot more than posting full moon photos on social media, though. And going with her flow does not have to require a lot of effort.

The moon goes through a predictable and regular cycle of change every month: growing from crescent to full and then fading to dark.

You can coattail on her process. Four phases are ideal for this.

At the new moon, set intentions, launch ideas and start projects. This can be as simple as thinking about it. Or you could write down your thoughts, on paper or in a digital note.

You could also create a little ceremony: Light a candle and write your intentions. Create a little altar if you like with crystals, images, cards and objects that fit what you’re asking to create. Fold the paper with your intentions and tuck it into the altar.

The first quarter moon is a good time to ask how you’re doing. What is growing? What is building? What can you cultivate or nudge along?

At the full moon, think about what you have created or accomplished, and what you are ready to release. This is also an appropriate time for a ceremony. If you still have the intentions you wrote at the full moon, you may want to burn them to let them go. You may also write down
anything you’d like to let go of, and burn that. A full moon is an excellent time to start a detox or a diet, by the way.

At the fourth quarter, let go. Allow yourself to go fallow; just plain allow.

It’s also helpful to pay attention to the sign the Moon is in as she travels through the month. She spends about two and a half days in each sign, and the nature of the sign gives big clues to the general vibe (and your emotional state).

Energy is high when the Moon is in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). People tend to be active and animated, and often upbeat.

When the Moon is in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), the atmosphere is more grounded or focused on practical matters.

Communication flies when the Moon is in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius).

And emotions are more tender, sensitive and moody when she is in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

Don’t know how to find her phases and movements? They’re available in yearly planners (Llewellyn is one source) and online at sites like Astro.com, as well as in freestanding astrology apps and astrology calendars you can add to your own.
